The use of membranes to separate non-osteogenic elements is a dominant concept in Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR). However, collagen membranes are not limited to a passive protective function. The membrane compartment plays an intrinsic and active role in directing the healing process within the GBR-treated defect. Cells migrating onto the membrane (e.g., CD68+ monocytes/macrophages, periostin-positive osteoprogenitors) express and release elements that are crucial for bone regeneration.

The collagen membrane actively participates in the bone healing process in situ through its highly purified atelocollagen structure, thereby improving tissue quality and its subsequent remodeling.
